Vertigo is a troublesome condition. In addition to being scary, it has the potential to be debilitating. This condition results in dizziness, and is accompanied by sensations that make you feel as if you are moving or spinning – even when not in motion.
Vertigo makes it difficult to walk, may negatively impact your vision, you may suffer from hearing issues, and it can even result in feelings of nausea and actual gastrointestinal distress.
The good news is, chiropractic treatment has proven to be effective in alleviating the symptoms of vertigo. Continue reading to learn more.
What is the Cause of Vertigo?
There are several causes of vertigo. The three main causes that have been identified by medical professionals to date include Meniere’s disease, vestibular neuritis, and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo or “BBPV”. Below are brief descriptions of each of these causes:
- Meniere’s Disease – This condition involves a change of pressure within the ear or ears, as well as an accumulation of fluid within the ear or ears.
- Vestibular Neuritis – This condition typically goes hand-in-hand with an infection of the ear. As a result of the infection, the nerves in the inner ear become inflamed.
- Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BBPV) – This condition typically occurs in the elderly. It causes calcium pieces to build up in the ear canal. In most instances, it is believed that it happens due to age; however, the main cause of the development of this issue is still being researched and has no current conclusion.
The Chiropractic Treatment for Vertigo
The chiropractic treatment for vertigo has been found to be highly effective for alleviating the symptoms of the condition. Various exercises and/or manipulations are performed that enhances the movements of joints that may move improperly in the cervical spine (or, upper spine region near the neck).
Chiropractic treatment most often addresses cervical vertigo, but has been found to assist in other types of vertigo, as well.
The joints, nerves, and vertebrae in the spine all communicate with the brain on a consistent basis. If there is an issue with that communication, it results in misinformation being transmitted to the brain.
As a result, many of the symptoms that occur with vertigo -such as dizziness and the sensation of movement -may occur. Basically, a chiropractor will perform steps that directly impact the vestibular system to relieve the vertigo symptoms.
Various maneuvers -such as the Epley maneuver – may also be utilized to aid in correcting vertigo.
