Chiropractic Care Found to be Beneficial for Those Suffering from Ear Infections

Otitis media (OM) – which is commonly referred to in simple terms as an “ear infection” – is a relatively common condition that occurs among individuals of all age groups. For children, it is considered to be one of the most common of all illnesses experienced during childhood.

While it occurs less frequently among teenagers and adults, it is still considered to be a common condition. In most instances, medical professionals will prescribe ear drops, antibiotics, and pain medications to alleviate the symptoms and discomfort of an ear infection; however, all of this may be avoided by simply turning to chiropractic care.

Basic Statistics and Surprising Facts

According to information from the World Health Organization, approximately 1% of all kids regularly experience infections of the ears in the United States. In less-developed areas, such as Alaska, this figure goes as high as 45% of all kids. In most cases, the infections subside by the age of 6; however, chronic, untreated ear infections may persist into the teenage and adult years.

In most cases, ear infections are not generally considered to be serious. There are some cases, though, where hearing loss occurs. Additionally, there have been numerous cases where an ear infection has resulted in death.

Given the fact that ear infections could result in serious consequences for the sufferer and the detrimental side effects associated with the most commonly prescribed treatments, it is critical that we all turn to chiropractic care for ear infections. While considered to be an “alternative” treatment, it is also considered to be the safest form of treatment.

Why Does Chiropractic Care Work?

There are several reasons why chiropractic care works for ear infections. It all relates to the neurology of the body, the muscles, the size of the Eustachian tube, and required adjustments of the upper area of the cervical region of the body.

Based on basic anatomy and physiology, we know that the muscles that surround the Eustachian tube within the ear are directly impacted by the C1, C2, C3, and C4 region of the cervical area.

In these areas, if complications occur, it can over-stimulate the muscles and result in a high level of tightness. This over-stimulation of the muscles can then cause the Eustachian tube to decrease in size. The smaller the area becomes, the more difficult it becomes for the area to drain.

A chiropractor can make adjustments that will relax the muscles and optimize the drainage of the infection away from the ear.
