Chiropractic care is a type of healthcare that is known for the treatment of joint and back complications; however, in recent years, many studies have concluded that it also has several other beneficial uses.
Of those, it has been established that it is highly beneficial for individuals that suffer from respiratory issues. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the most prevalent respiratory diseases negatively impacting individuals are asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and pulmonary hypertension.
While there are medication and surgical treatment options available for those that suffer from these respiratory issues, chiropractic care is considered to be a safe alternative treatment. Continue reading to learn more.
What is Chiropractic Care?
Chiropractic care is a type of health care profession that places an emphasis on the nervous system, the musculoskeletal system, and how issues that affect these systems may have an impact on one’s general health. Chiropractic care practitioners utilize a hands-on, drug-free approach in treating patients.
The most common procedure used among practitioners is spinal manipulation; however, other approaches – such as the utilization of heat therapy and ice, exercise, relaxation techniques, wellness counseling, and the integration of a special diet and/or supplements may be encouraged by those in the profession.
The Study
In 2016, a study was released in the Journal of Physical Therapy Science that covered a total of 30 patients between the ages of 20 and 38. None of the patients were under a treatment for a respiratory condition, but the respiratory function of each was tested prior to and following the study.
They were each given either spinal manipulation therapy or a fake treatment. Those that received the real chiropractic care treatment were found that their respiratory function improved significantly. Those that received the fake treatment did not display any changes in their respiratory function.
Since this study, many patients with respiratory issues have received chiropractic care and have been found to experience significant, positive results.
Examples
In the following examples, patients who suffered from lung disease or asthma were provided with chiropractic care. Continue reading to learn what happened:
- Asthma – Considered to be the single most prevalent respiratory disease, asthma is a challenging issue for those that suffer from it. In nearly all cases, patients are provided with inhalers and/or medication to assist in controlling attacks, opening the airways, and/or masking the symptoms experienced. Patients provided with a chiropractic alignment were found to have restoration in the ability of the lungs to operate. Airways were found to open up and breathing resumed normal patterns.
- Lung Disease – It is a known fact that chiropractic care is unable to cure any type of lung disease; however, it has been established that if it is added to the treatments that sufferers receive, they will have a higher quality of life. Patients that received chiropractic care due to lung disease were found that they could breathe a little easier and could handle higher levels of physical exercise. For example, they could walk further distances. Air flow levels were higher.
