Thank you for rejoining us as we conclude our two-part series on the various types of therapies offered by massage specialists and the purposes of those treatments.
In part 1 of this series, we described massage therapy and outlined 3 types – aromatherapy massage, deep-tissue massage, and prenatal massage. In this extension of the series, we will continue by outlining reflexology,
Swedish massage, and trigger point massage. If you suffer from certain types of medical or emotional conditions, massage therapy should be included in your wellness regimen in order to provide you with the boost that you need to cope and/or recover.
Reflexology
This form of massage therapy is ideal for individuals who are seeking a means to relax and/or increase their energy levels. The therapist will either gently or firmly apply pressure on specific points on the ears, the feet, and the hands.
Swedish Massage
This type of massage therapy focuses on the entire body. It helps in releasing knots that develop in the muscles and tension in the body. It is considered ideal for those that have a sensitivity to being touched.
The therapist will use a variety of motions, taps, vibrations, joint movements, strokes, and kneads to perform the massage session. If you are in search of a deep sense of relaxation and/or a full body massage, you will benefit from Swedish massage.
Trigger Point Massage
If you have issues with chronic pain, an injury, or other types of medical conditions, you may benefit from a trigger point massage. The body contains a large amount of trigger points. Sometimes, these become very tight.
This is an excellent type of therapy for those that have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia or individuals that experience high levels of stress and anxiety. The strokes are broad and flowing.
The therapist will combine gentle touch with deeper levels of pressure on the trigger points. Individuals that have a desire to manage chronic pain without the use of potentially harmful medications will benefit immensely from this type of massage therapy.
The Benefits
Massage therapy offers many benefits. It is highly effective in reducing pain levels, eliminating stress, and alleviating tension within the muscles. Individuals that suffer from the following are found to experience the best results from massage therapy:
- Anxiety
- Temporomandibular Joint Issues
- Gastrointestinal Problems
- Injuries from Sports
- Fibromyalgia
- Strains

While considered to be optimal for many physical and emotional issues, it is important to understand that massage therapy is intended to be used alongside of any medical treatments that your doctor recommends for your health and wellbeing.
Many also benefit from massage therapy because of the fact that it helps increase the feeling of being connected to another. It is also highly comforting for many.
